Designing for Manufacturability

Part of OER’s philosophy in manufacturing is to go beyond simply producing and shipping parts to our customers. We take pride in the quality of our work, and the relationships we build with our customers. We are here to help you by delivering the best possible products for your specific requirements. Sometimes, that involves educating customers on ways in which their product designs can be improved.

A common design error that we encounter involves the selection of specific aluminum alloys. Do you know the difference between 6061-T6 aluminum and 5052-H32 aluminum?

6061-T6 has a higher tensile strength, which can lead to cracking when subjected to a tight bend radius. "T6" is perfect for flat panels, particularly a front panel on a rack-mounted enclosure.

5052-H32 aluminum is significantly less expensive than "T6" and much easier to bend. For most sheet metal requirements, especially brackets or other bent parts, 5052-H32 is the best choice.
