Designing Rack Mount Chassis

Many types of electronic enclosures are designed to fit into standard electronic equipment racks. The most common rack has a width of 19 inches and can vary greatly in its depth. OER does not normally manufacture the racks themselves, we concentrate on building the chassis for these mounts.

The chassis width for a 19" rack is no more than 17 inches in length and most commonly is a multiple of a "U" number [(U x 1.75) - .031 = Front Panel Height]. The chart below shows the most common 1U and 2U configurations.

For more information on Standard Rack Mount Enclosure Specifications please consult the Mil-Spec Document: EIA-310 - Racks, panels & associated equipment

Other size racks are also available including 24 and 30 inch widths, these size are much less common. If you have the need for a panel or enclosure for anything non-standard, please contact OER for a quotation or more information.
